McDisc

Q) When - why did you start playing disc golf?

I started around 2008ish. I was playing other sports, like basketball, softball and flag football and getting older and more prone to injury, so needed to find an alternative sport. Hanging out with Lanzman one day and mentioned wanting to try Disc golf, he proceeded to introduced me to the game, first by throwing at lamp posts at a local park and then at the closest disc golf course, which for us is one of the oldest Grand Daddy courses, Shady Oaks DGC in Orangevale CA

Q) What and where is your favorite course?

Ryan Ranch in Monterey, CA is an amazing course in a beautiful location. It has 30 (soon to be 36) holes that offer a variety of elevation changes from wide open bomber to tight wooded fairways. Incredible top of the world shots, multiple iconic picturesque holes, a constant stream of airplanes overhead landing at the nearby airport, and it is located a few miles inland from the ocean, so it has consistent weather ranging from misty and foggy to sunshine and back within a few hours.

Q) What is your favorite manufacturer or brand(s)?

I carry a very mixed bag or cart and I am always ready to try a new disc. The majority of my discs are from Innova. I also pack Legacy, Dynamic Discs, Gateway, LoneStar and Latitude64 discs.

Q) Go to disc?

My 177g reverse stamp Innova roc3 is my all-purpose, go to, usually second shot approach and upshot disc. It's nicely beat in, can hold a hyzer line and finishes smooth.

Q) Favorite Tree?

The one that I didn't hit on my last throw or a Coastal Redwood.

When did you start and why?

I was invited to BBQ party in an empty field by Lanzman’s house back in 2012. Most of us invitees had never heard of disc golf at that time. Lanzman and his friend made some rudimentary baskets from anything they could get their hands on. Old chain, cut up metal trash cans, some sort of pole…you get the picture.  He invited his guests to play a few rounds and gave everyone 1 disc to throw.  I was given a Star Shark.  Yes, I was terrible.

I had so much fun, the next weekend I joined him and McDisc at one of the hardest courses in Northern California, New Hogan Lake. It has steep hills, 400+ feet fairways, rocks, a lake, and nasty trees.  That’s when I first learned that trees are dicks!  After 2 lost discs and a score way over 35, I was hooked.  The comradery with the guys, the party atmosphere, and a few drinks… was all it took. I bought a starter disc set the next day. Naturally I didn’t pay Lanzman and McDisc back for the discs I lost. 😊

Go to disc

My go-to disc has to be the MVP Inertia.  While it’s listed as a distance driver, I think of it as a fairway driver that can be used as either a distance driver or mid-range driver. It’s a forgiving disc that’s very stable, flies true, and has gotten me out of many jams.

Favorite Pro player

I really don’t have one.  I enjoy watching the top players compete on YouTube (both male and female), but I always find myself going for whoever is in 2nd or 3rd place at the time.  Gota love the comeback.

Favorite course

This one is hard for me. But I’ll have to go with De Laveaga in Santa Cruz.  It has everything! Long shots, technical shots, elevation changes, water hazards (sometimes) and ends with the best top of the world shot I’ve ever seen.  When it’s not undergoing maintenance, it has 29 holes. While ending anywhere close to par probably won't ever happen for me, I still make sure I go there every time I’m in the Santa Cruz or Monterey area.

Something about me

Since I don’t play with a lot of discs, I’ll often wear a couple disc holsters around my waist instead of carrying a bag. And that suits me perfectly. I’m just out there to have fun, hang with good people, get some exercise, and play a sport I’ve grown to love.  I consider myself an active member of NPDGA (Not-Professional Disc Golf Association).

Favorite Tree

The mighty Oak

 Lanzman

Hey, Disc fam, It’s Lanzman from TRD, Treesrdicks.

I threw my first frisbee into a pin in 1979. Once I found Del Campo High School’s disc golf course I was hooked. Lit at night, my buddy and I would grab a twelve pack and play night rounds. I honed my skills at the Classic Shady Oaks course.

My Go To disc is the Innova Star Leopard. I have that dialed in for almost any shot. The Innova Star and Blizzard discs fill my bag!

Favorite Professional player is Kristin Tattar, 2022 Disc Golf World Champion.

Favorite course is Lake Amador South! Nestled in the Sierra Foothills of Ione, California, Lake Amador offers diverse and challenging fairways, averaging 300 feet. I relish altitude changes, playing over water hazards and crossing valleys while maintaining a technical element to every hole. The course is always maintained and has several amenities I like, such as a disc store, cafe, swimming lake, and beautiful scenery.

Why do I carry the holster? I’ve endured two neck surgeries and still suffer severely with spinal stenosis. With the holster, I’m able to remove the weight from my neck and shoulders and reduce the amount of times bending over and picking up that traditional backpack style bags require. I’ve used a variety of carts but just end up adding too many accessories or carrying everyone else’s gear.

Favorite Tree has always been the Madrone!

When/why did you start playing disc golf?

I started playing disc golf September 2020. My brother, McDisc had been trying for years to get me to play, but I was very busy with family and work. So in September of 2020 I decided to give it a try. My children were grown and no longer playing sports and I was just months away from retiring from a very stressful job. I met the crew at their favorite course and McDisc gave me a crash course on how to throw the disc. Needless to say I was horrible. But it was challenging and a load of fun hanging out with the crew. I was so hooked that I was YouTubeing videos on how to throw the disc as soon as I got home. I bought a couple of buzzes and judge putters and proceeded to practice every day. I am even more hooked today than I was then.

What and where is your favorite course? Why?

My favorite course is Pioneer Park in Somerset Ca. It’s a small park course but it has some very cool lines, and we can get a few rounds done before we head home.

What is your favorite manufacturer or brand(s)?

I mostly use Innova and Discraft discs. Mostly because it’s what I bought when I was learning and practicing in the fields by my house. For a putter I love my Gateway Shaman and Chief.

Favorite PDGA touring pro(s) to watch?

I have several favorite PDGA pros. My favorite FPO is Kristen Tattar, her form is near perfect.  For MPO players my favorite to watch in competition is Paul McBeth. He is relentless once he is on the lead card. My favorite pro to watch on YouTube is Paul Ulibarri and Big Germ. Their banter reminds me of the TRD Crew when we are all together hitting trees.

I love this sport and 99% of people who play it are wonderful people. The other 1% with attitudes should just grow roots and stand in the fairway.

Riggs

Hello people of Disc, it's Riggs from TRD, Treesrdicks.

I threw my first disc in 2003 in Portland Oregon with my brother Jesse, I had no clue what I was doing. My disc didn't go very far, and I had zero control. Fast forward 17 years and my brother Mcdisc invited me to play a round with his friends, after some quick instructions on exactly how to hold and throw the disc I was hooked. My disc still doesn't go very far, but I finally have an idea what those damn numbers on the disc actually do, well what they are supposed to do if you throw the disc correctly.

My go to Disc is my Buzz, well Brad's Buzz since I threw my old Buzz into a tree (dick) and cracked the hell out of it.

My Favorite course is Brooktrails in Willits, Ca. Incredible course that plays side by side with ball golf with huge redwoods all through the course.

I decided to join up with treesrdicks because they said they were a NorCal traveling disc golf club that likes to drink IPA’s and BBQ in between rounds and what better way to spend a Saturday then leave your house at 5am and be teeing off at 7:30 in order to get 2 rounds in. I've played as far south as San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and as far north as Maxwell. Still looking for my first Ace.

Courses I am looking forward to playing this fall. Finnon Lake and Truckee River.

Favorite Tree is the Giant Sequoia
